As Canada tries to stem the influx of immigrants, a report underscores the enormous contribution immigrants make to the Canadian economy. Immigrants make up a third of Canada's entrepreneurs and create jobs in sectors such as construction, health care and retail, according to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

“Immigrants make up 33% of all entrepreneurs with employees in Canada. They create jobs in sectors such as construction, professional services, healthcare and retail,” IRCC said in a social media post.

This is also reflected in the 2021 Canadian census, which shows that 8.3 million immigrants call Canada home, or about 23% of the total population.

However, recent changes in Canadian immigration policy have made immigration more difficult for Indians.

The country has a Two-year admission limit for international studentsand recently announced plans to limit the number of temporary residents it will accept starting this fall.

At 37%, Indians represented the largest national group receiving study visas from Canada in 2023.

These changes have created challenges for many Indian students who struggle to find a job after graduation, despite may work 20 hours per week during their studies.

In addition, rising living costs and limited opportunities for permanent residency pose further challenges. While there are success stories, the overall situation for many Indians in Canada is far from ideal. Many are unable to find a job that matches their qualifications or secure permanent residency.

Despite these challenges, Canada recognizes the important role immigrants play in meeting its economic needs.

IRCC highlights the significant contribution that immigrants make in numerous sectors: over 36% of workers in accommodation and food services, almost 38% in transport and warehousing, and over 34% in professional, scientific and technical services are immigrants.

The Canadian Immigration Lawyers' Association (CILA) has recognized the need for reform and proposed strategic changes to immigration law.

CILA calls for the introduction of an Immigration Bill of Rights and the creation of an ombudsperson for IRCC and the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA). The aim is to improve the experience of new arrivals and ensure fair treatment for all.
