First Gold Accented Cladding Appears as Alias Continues to Rise

Around the venerable McVeigh's Pub in downtown Toronto, the Madison Group alias continues to climb and is now more than halfway to its crown. Designed by Teeple Architects and Turner Fleischer Architects, the 48-story condominium sits on the southwest corner of Church and Richmond streets and features gold accents against a black backdrop.

UrbanToronto last provided an update in June 2024, when the building reached its first tower floors and the first glazing was installed. The tower now has 31 floors, which are now clad up to the 19th floor.

A construction elevator clings to the south facade of the podium (see below in October 2024), between the projecting volumes of the podium floors, which will eventually be connected into an uninterrupted podium once the elevator is removed. The die-cut windows in this section had white weatherproof material applied between them after the glazing panels were inserted.

The brick installation on the west facade began at the end of October. Below in November 2024, we see prefabricated brick panels spanning the second and lower halves of the third level, accented by vertical slats. The podium cladding features a combination of glazed black brick and matte charcoal gray tones for a textured structure. Above, the tower's notched southwest corner will house an outdoor terrace on the podium.

In October 2024, this close-up highlighted the material palette, with aluminum posts and back-painted seafoam parapet panels framing reflective glazing and surrounded by black metal panels. The first prominent gold accent frame stands out, a “randomly placed” decorative element whose frequency increases as the tower rises.

Looking southeast from Richmond Street, we see additional setbacks on the north facade above the 10th and 12th floors. The staggered arrangement of the windows is intended to give the outdoor area more energy. The tower volume at the top right extends to the 30th floor, with formwork for the 31st floor in progress. The ground floor is designed to accommodate retail space along Richmond Street, while a small portion of the parking lot closest to the building will be landscaped as parquets.

Viewed from Church and Richmond Streets, old meets new with the soaring tower that surrounds McVeigh's Irish Pub. The window patterns change with each design of the floor plate, including slim panes attached to the curved corner on the right. The parapet wall on the 12th floor is waiting to be covered.

Alias reaches a final height of 160.52 m and will house 592 condominiums.
