Research Infosource named Lakehead the third largest university in Canada in the undergraduate category in its annual Research University of the Year ranking.
Lakehead ranked first from 2015 to 2019 – the first time an institution in Research Infosource’s undergraduate category has been named Research University of the Year for five consecutive years.
Lakehead President and Vice Chancellor Dr. Gillian Siddall, said she was proud to see the university back on the podium.

Lakehead’s placement at the top of the country’s undergraduate university category is based on the university’s balanced assessment of research inputs and outputs stands out.
Dr. Andrew P. Dean, vice president of research and innovation at Lakehead, said he was pleased to be ranked among the top three universities in Canada in the undergraduate category.
“This ranking reflects the impact and importance of the research taking place at Lakehead University. We consistently rank among the best universities in the country in terms of citations and research funding. In Northern Ontario, we are the trusted expert in knowledge transfer that leads to innovation and economic development,” said Dr. Dean.
One of the research outcomes measured is nonprofit research revenue. In this category, Lakehead University is number one in Canada for the third year in a row.
“This ranking reflects our commitment to working with numerous partners across our regions to address current challenges such as health care disparities, food insecurity, housing access and climate change.
He added that Lakehead’s recently expanded research plan, 2024-2026, is based on five key priorities and reflects important areas and future growth in the regions where the university operates.
“Lakehead University continues to be a research-intensive university and views research and innovation as an important economic driver for our regions,” said Dr. Dean.
Research Infosource’s calculation of the year’s research universities examines several factors, including the total amount of funded research money each university receives, research intensity per faculty (total research income per faculty member), and research intensity per graduate student (total research income). per doctoral student), total number of publications, publication intensity and publication impact.
“Excellent scientific research combined with research leadership has made Lakehead a leading research company in its class,” said Ron Freedman, CEO of Research Infosource Inc.
