India will wait for Canadian police to share information about the three Indian men it arrested last year and charged with the murder of a Khalistani terrorist, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar said on Saturday.
Canadian police on Friday charged the three with the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar and said they were investigating whether the suspects had ties to the Indian government.
Mr. Jaishankar said he had seen news reports about the arrests and said the suspects “appear to be Indians with a gang background… we have to wait for the police to tell us.”
“But as I said, one of the concerns that we have raised with them is that they have allowed organized crime from India, particularly from Punjab, to operate in Canada,” Mr. Jaishankar said.
Sanjay Verma, India's high commissioner to Canada, said he hoped to receive regular updates from Canadian authorities about the three arrested Indians.
“I understand that the arrests were the result of an investigation by relevant Canadian law enforcement authorities. This issue affects Canada and therefore we have no comments to make in this regard,” Mr. Verma added.
The trio, all Indian nationals, were arrested in the Alberta city of Edmonton on Friday, police said.
Nijjar, 45, was shot in June outside a gurdwara in Surrey, a Vancouver suburb with a large Sikh population. A few months later, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claimed that the Indian government was involved, leading to a diplomatic crisis with New Delhi.
