It’s officially the end of an era as the Toronto Star sign has been removed from the 1 Yonge Street building.

The Star recently celebrated its 50th anniversary in the now iconic office building, which over the years has become a major landmark on the Toronto skyline.

This morning crews successfully removed the sign from one side of the building. Work will continue later this week to remove the letters from the other side.

Letters from the shield are now discarded on the ground in a nearby storage area.

Toronto StarThe 25-story office building was constructed to replace the Old Toronto Star Building at 80 King Street West. The 22-story Art Deco tower was demolished to make way for First Canadian Place.

Toronto StarThe star’s new address, 1 Yonge Street, was at the end of the longest street in the world.

In 2012, Pinnacle International bought Toronto Star’s headquarters, printing facility and surrounding parking lot for over a quarter billion dollars.
