Alba's Excavation Deepens in the Heart of Mississauga

Edenshaw Developments is building Alba, a 32-story condominium just southeast of Hurontario Street and Central Parkway East in the heart of Mississauga. The site is 650m north of Cooksville GO station and is soon to also serve as a transfer point with the LRT Hurontario, which is currently under construction, and will open with the Fairview station near Alba before Alba is complete.

The condominium building is actually mixed use with some retail space on the ground floor. UrbanToronto last viewed the project in November of last year, where we saw the support and excavation work underway after construction began over the summer. Since then, excavation has continued at the site at 1 Fairview Road East while construction work on the nearby LRT continues while working towards a projected completion date of late 2024.

An image captured in late April 2023 illustrates the evolving landscape of the site. The excavation area is being systematically excavated to accommodate eight levels of underground parking and wells for a geothermal cooling and heating system. Given the depth of this excavation and the amount of underground work to bring the project back to ground level, it will be 2024 before we see the shapes of the first floor over the fence surrounding the site.

In a drone view from above, the terraced bedrock layers are clearly visible as excavators work to clear the entire underground area. Also visible in this bird’s-eye view is a mirror-like puddle in the southwest corner, throwing part of the sky back at us.

A look at the construction site a month later in May shows that around two thirds of the hole still had to be excavated. Towering within the pit is a massive 18-foot boulder – a silent testament to the arduous work ahead.

By the end of June (and then mid-July for the second and third images below) the pace of work has accelerated as a crane is now in place while excavators and aerial work platforms continue to work in this particularly deep pit.

Once Alba is complete, its design by Core Architects will be combined with interior designs by Cecconi Simone, which will include a curated leisure program spanning over 1,850 sqm in addition to the building’s 418 residential suites.

UrbanToronto will continue to monitor the progress of this development, but in the meantime you can learn more from our database file linked below. If you wish, you can join the discussion in the dedicated project forum thread or leave a comment in the space provided on this page.
