Canadian airline announces changes to carry-on luggage rules

Westjet will soon use a new hand luggage size in which the industry standards are better align themselves.

On Monday, the airline announced that on May 6, 2025 he would accept a new maximum hand luggage size.

It is said that the new size is “seamlessly aligned with the general dimensions for international luggage luggage, which are used by other North American airlines and luggage manufacturers, including partner Delta Air Lines”.

Westjet found that the decision to introduce a new hand luggage size was carried out after years of implementation of size limits, which was “unique for the airline”.

“The introduction of a new standard size ensures that more pockets fit more flights. We therefore expect that this has a major impact on the overall experience on board,” said Colleen Tynan, Vice President of Experience Management of Westjets, in a press release.

Westjet's aircraft have different variations of container capacity, including sun wing aircraft that are added to the fleet this spring. The company announced that it received feedback from customers and employees to maximize the storage capacity.

The maximum of the new size for hand luggage is 22 “x 14” x 9 “, takes into account wheels and handles. This gives the existing limit of 21” x 15 “x 9 a height and exchanges against a single inch width.

Westjet said that the change would “increase the overall dusk capacity and improve the comfort of the cabin and bin functions”, especially when it comes to complete flights.

The airline sends new luggage devices to all airports that it serves until March 13.

According to Westjet, guests are made available for adaptation to the new hand luggage size dimensions, and they will continue to accept both the current and the new maximum luggage size by May 6th if the updated guideline comes into force.

These are not the only changes for Westjet customers.

In February, the airline announced that it would revise its loyalty program for Westjet Rewards members.

Five changes will be transferred to the program on April 30th. The airline states that these updates are facilitated to the members to earn, redeem and reach a status.
