TikTok, it's your birthday

According to Black TikTok, you could be the birthday boy if you’re the center of attention.

A new Black TikTok “You The Birthday” trend has been making its rounds online.

The phrase is considered the latest viral hit launched by Black creators on the video-sharing platform. However, those who are unfamiliar will not know what the term means and how to use it.

A TikToker named The Trill Professor gave an overview of how the phrase fits into AAVE’s fluid grammatical structure.

“Just context, emphasis and cultural understanding do all the work,” the TikToker, real name Travis G. Hubbard, explained of how the phrase came to life.

Hubbard, a current Ph.D. candidate in literacy, language and culture, told TODAY about the new connotations of the term.

“When someone says ‘It’s your birthday,’ they position the subject as a metaphorical embodiment of everything the word ‘birthday’ means – celebration, joy, the reason everyone came,” Hubbard explained. “It’s not your birthday… You don’t have a birthday. You are the birthday. The subject becomes the thing itself.”

Forbes further described the phrase as a way of expressing that someone is acting as the protagonist of a situation, whether justified or not.

“The term is used to describe a person who tries too hard, behaves over-the-top, or expects fawning, birthday-like attention from everyone in the room, to the point where they embody the entire party,” the release details.

A new term added to the ever-growing AAVE language, “You the Birthday” can be an expression of endearment or a dig at the specific person. Of course, that also depends on the context.

In the video, Hubbard added, “And Black English does this constantly and beautifully.”

For example, some TikTokers have left comments calling someone a “birthday” when they achieved a goal or made a good statement about a topic. On the other hand, users also hurl the phrase at those who behave offensively or want to draw unnecessary attention.

As the phrase became popular on TikTok and other platforms, older internet users expressed their confusion. While Generation Z eventually came to the rescue, Millennials mocked them for not being able to keep up at first.

The expression spawned other versions that follow a similar linguistic pattern. Whenever another TikToker does something or expresses a feeling that upholds a certain trait, savvy users now call them by a different word and evolve the expression while mostly staying true to their original rules.

TikTokers even responded to this extended trend in Hubbards’ video.

“He explained the birthday, he explained the birth certificate,” one commenter shared, comparing his explanation of context to the ID document.

Another explained: “Video long, you’re the birthday month.”

“This is layered, you’re the birthday cake,” joked another.

However, like many trends, Black TikTok is already aware that the outside world will notice “It’s your birthday,” signaling that the party may end early and the next viral phrase begins.
