The 8-day immersive experience in San Jose, Costa Rica combines practical Spanish conversation training
As more professional women look for opportunities to expand globally, boost their professional confidence, and travel with ease, Spanish is for Black girls continues Its mission is to help Black women become conversant in Spanish through the coveted Spanish Immersion experience in Costa Rica.
For the past five years, founder Kaywanda Lamb has helped professional Black women move beyond fear and classroom memorization into real-world Spanish conversations that create confidence, connection, and cultural freedom in their Spanish classes and in the community. She has hosted six immersion trips to Costa Rica and Mexico, and the upcoming trip, scheduled to take place January 16-23, 2027, will be her seventh immersion trip for working black women.
The eight-day immersive experience in San Jose, Costa Rica combines hands-on Spanish conversation training, cultural exploration, sisterhood and luxury travel in a single transformative experience designed specifically for ambitious Black women who want to speak Spanish confidently in business, travel and everyday life.
“Too many brilliant black women have spent years learning Spanish without ever feeling confident enough to actually speak it,” Lamb said. “This immersion experience changes that. We create an environment where women feel safe, supported and empowered to use Spanish in real-world situations while building lifelong memories and friendships.”
The immersion experience in Costa Rica includes:
• Daily Spanish conversation workshops
• Guided speaking exercises with native Spanish speakers
• Cultural excursions and local experiences
• Boutique accommodations and curated experiences
• Networking and sisterhood with professional Black women
• Practical Spanish practice in restaurants, markets, shops and community facilities
• Personal support from an experienced Spanish teacher
• 1-year access to the Spanish Course for Black Girls™ (optional but recommended)
Unlike traditional language programs, Spanish for Black Girls™ focuses heavily on practical communication and confidence building. Participants range from beginner to advanced and include lawyers, entrepreneurs, educators, healthcare professionals and business leaders.
Many students report that when they leave the immersion experience they have changed, not only in their Spanish skills but also in the way they see themselves navigating the world. The immersion journey also reflects a growing trend among professional Black women seeking global experiences, cultural enrichment and educational travel opportunities that feel safe, empowering and community-centered.
“I enjoyed Costa Rica. I got everything I wanted. I wanted to immerse myself and take a vacation, and I got both. I had been on the course for six months, practicing with Kaywanda and other professionals, when I decided to take the immersion trip to Costa Rica. It was an eye-opener for me to learn Spanish at that level and have so much support along the way. Getting the chance to practice all day, every day, abroad with native speakers and seeing that they understood me I would highly recommend the Spanish for Black Girls™ course and the community to everyone.” Black woman ready to improve her Spanish skills, it’s an amazing feeling to learn conversational Spanish and be taught by a teacher who understands you. “I can see the difference in my speaking skills and confidence since I started,” says Marissa I. from Chicago.
“Our students not only leave school with more Spanish skills and a better understanding of the people and their history,” Lamb added. “They walk away transformed. They already know they belong in global spaces, and now they have the confidence to speak for themselves. They realize they can confidently communicate, socialize and move through the world at any time.”
What research shows about the Spanish language
According to an article by Enrique Martínez García of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas and María Teresa Martínez García of the University of Utah published in Harvard University’s Observatorio Cervantes, Spanish has a significant impact on the economy.
Based on a 2018 survey by Ipsos Public Affairs, the report shows that 9 out of 10 U.S. companies need employees who speak languages other than English. Demand for languages such as Spanish has increased significantly over the past five years and is expected to continue to increase. The sectors most likely to see an increase in this demand are healthcare and social services (64%), followed by retail (59%), education (57%), professional and technical services (55%) and construction (54%). The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (2019) report also shows that 97% of companies use the non-English speaking skills of their workforce in domestic markets, while only 54% use them in international markets. The most in-demand language is Spanish, with 85% of companies reporting a need for Spanish-speaking employees. Additionally, 42% of companies that already employ Spanish-speaking workers say they are currently looking for more employees with language skills.
The Costa Rica Immersion Experience is part of the broader Spanish for Black Girls™ movement that helps professional Black women learn conversational Spanish through structured coaching, community, immersion and culturally affirming support, enabling them to pursue new opportunities at home and abroad.
There are a limited number of spots available for the upcoming Costa Rica immersion experience. Space is intentionally limited to create a boutique and personal environment.
