Statistics Canada has released its March data on the monthly prices farmers receive for a range of agricultural products, including grains, oilseeds, specialty crops, cattle, swine, poultry, eggs and dairy products.

Prairie crop prices are rising

In the Prairie provinces, prices for most crops increased in March compared to February. The upward pressure on crop prices was attributed to strong demand, higher input costs and concerns about growing conditions.

Canola prices rose for the second straight month across the Prairies, with increases ranging from 1.1% in Saskatchewan to 5.6% in Manitoba. Year-over-year, canola prices were higher in all Prairie provinces in March 2026, led by Manitoba at 6.4%. Rapeseed prices were supported by strong domestic seed crushing and interest in biofuels.

Wheat prices (excluding durum wheat) rose in all provinces compared to the previous month, with Ontario leading the way with an increase of 4.7%. The expected decline in domestic seeded area in 2026 may have partially driven this increase. Rising fertilizer costs and concerns about growing conditions for new crops in key producing countries also supported wheat prices.

Livestock and pig prices

Slaughter hog prices were higher in all provinces in March compared to the previous month, with increases ranging from 3.1% in Prince Edward Island to 5.9% in New Brunswick. Tighter domestic supply and strong exports of slaughter pigs to the United States supported price increases.

Slaughter cattle prices rose in all provinces except Quebec, where they fell 2.6% month-on-month. Increases elsewhere ranged from 0.3% in Ontario to 2.9% in Alberta. Due to strong beef demand, livestock prices in March 2026 were at least 17.1% higher in each province than in the same month last year.

Data availability and census

Prices for over 35 commodities are broken down by province, with some data series going back 40 years. Price data is extracted from administrative files and derived from Statistics Canada surveys. The 2026 Census of Agriculture is scheduled for May and will provide insights every five years that inform business decisions in Canada’s agricultural sector.
