John Boyega And Teyonah Parris sat down BLACK COMPANY to talk about all the symbolism seen in them Jamie Foxx-supported crime thriller “They Cloned Tyrone”.
The new sci-fi comedy follows a series of sinister events that leads an unlikely trio (John Boyega, Teyonah Parris and Jamie Foxx) to the bottom of a nefarious government conspiracy. A genre-bending homage to 1970s blaxploitation films, Slick Charles (Foxx), Yo-Yo (Parris) and Fontaine (Boyega) join forces after discovering what appears to be a cloned version of Fontaine.
The group soon realizes that an undercover organization has placed a focus on their predominantly black community. Directed by JoelTaylorAccording to Boyega, the crime comedy contains elements of satire, horror and absurd humor and serves as a “self-reflection film”.
“It’s a film that takes a stereotype and turns it on its head,” he told BLACK ENTERPRISE of the film’s central theme.
“So it sometimes speaks to our general view of people that we may not know.”
Boyega noted the blaxploitation references throughout the film, as well as the “comedy” that helps lighten the mood. It was all part of Taylor’s vision for the film, which is packed with symbolic messages that Parris says were “highly intentional.”
“Definitely intentional, from the names of some of the products to the way Joel arranged certain shots,” she shared.
Boyega and Parris talked about what it was like working with Foxx, who was absent from the dinner after his hospitalization earlier this year due to an undisclosed medical emergency, and recalled the veteran actor cracking jokes on set that all went to the brought laughter.
They also pointed to the intense debates and conversations that will result from the film’s tie-in to the government conspiracy.
“I think those talks are just going to continue,” Boyega said.
“But at the same time I think they will laugh too. They will also love the comedy and the Jamie Foxx.”
