The meteorologist warns that people should stay in their homes as heavy rains could trigger flash floods and lightning strikes kill or injure every year in Canada.

A thunderstorm between Grande Cache and Fox Creek, Alabama, is said to be moving east at 30 kilometers per hour and may produce hailstones the size of a nickel.

Another storm front is said to be moving east from Edmonton to west of Calgary at 50 kilometres per hour.

The weather service recommends that people near such thunderstorms seek shelter immediately.

Severe weather warnings have also been issued for large parts of central Alberta and the British Columbia regions of Prince George and Kootenay Lake.

According to Environment Canada, severe thunderstorms can also produce tornadoes. Strong wind gusts can damage buildings, topple trees and blow vehicles off the road.
