Canada to impose surtax on Chinese-made steel, aluminum products

Canada will impose a 25 percent surcharge on select steel and aluminum imports from China after releasing its final list of affected products on Tuesday.

The additional tax on these products comes into force on October 22nd.

The intention of the move was first announced in August and followed a month of consultations with stakeholders. It also follows the United States, which will impose its own additional tax of 25 percent on selected Chinese steel and aluminum products from October 15th.

“We are working in lockstep with key international partners to protect Canadian workers and businesses in our steel and aluminum sectors from China's deliberate, state-driven policies of overcapacity and oversupply, which are undermining Canada's competitiveness in domestic and global markets.” “Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland said in a statement.

Starting Tuesday, Canada's 100 percent tariff on all Chinese-made electric vehicles (EVs), including some hybrid vehicles, trucks and buses, also came into effect. These measures were first announced at the end of August.

The federal government announces that it will review the new measures one year after they come into force.
