Golden Krust marks 35 years with Island Select Start at Walmart

By Jeroslyn Jovonn

Golden Krust is expanding with two new signature paste aromas in Walmarts nationwide.

Golden Krust brings its characteristic Caribbean aromas nationwide more customers with the exclusive introduction of Golden Krust Island Select near Walmart.

Golden Krust has launched its Island Select line exclusively at 1,600 Walmart® locations across the country more than 35 years after the opening of its first inpatient location in Bronx, New York. Iceland Select Line debut with two new retail varieties for Jamaican pastettes: strawberry and cream cheese and vegetables – overall a boldly new packaging speech to strengthen the commitment of the brand for quality and innovation.

The Strawberry & Frischkäse -Patty was developed to inspire new arrivals from the Golden Krust brand, and offers a sweet and creamy version of the classic Jamaican beef paste. With real strawberries and smooth cream cheese in a crispy, golden crust, it is a perfect pleasure for breakfast or dessert – especially in combination with vanilla ice cream.

The vegetable paste offers a hearty mixture of cabbage, corn, green beans, carrots, broccoli and onions, seasoned with Caribbean herbs and spices such as garlic, thyme and Scottish bonnet. Place it in the air roast at 360 degrees for about 16 minutes and you have the perfectly crispy pastlet you can enjoy.

“We have been with Walmart for over 10 years now and they were looking for a certain line that spoke to our core demography and also a new population group for our past stages in Jamaican style.” Steven Clarke, Vice President Marketing by Golden Krust, tells Black Enterprise.

After Golden Krust had analyzed Walmart's data, he started developing something fresh and inventive.

“Everything signaled the fact that we had to expand the product line to something fertile. This is probably the greatest innovation in the island selection.” I think it's the first pastlet filled with fruit on the market. “

The new Island Select line from pastette culminates the ongoing partnership of Golden Krust with Walmart, which has been commissioned by the mega retailer for the first time since the first growth of the Caribbean bakery.

“Walmart saw the success with the spicy beef, mild beef and jerk chicken,” said Clarke. “We appreciate the partnership that we were able to secure and maintain with the buy team at Walmart.”

Clarke grew up in the Golden Krust brand. His uncle, the late Lowell Hawthorne, founded the company in 1989 and started with a single shop in the Bronx. Golden Krust has always been a family -run business in which Clarkes parents had three places where he worked during his entire youth.

As an adult, he rose from operations managers to Vice President Marketing for the company of his family. The vision of his uncle grows from a restaurant at over 100 locations in the franchise and company ownership in eight states with plans for the expansion and products in west in the most important retailers nationwide, the persistent attractiveness of Golden Krust's characteristic aromas, delicious pastets and loyal customer base.

“To see where my teenager has come from, I am definitely proud of the brand and the continued growth that we can generate,” said Clarke. “We are very lucky to carry out this expansion and go to over 30 states in 1,600 Walmarts.”

Golden Krust Island Select is available nationwide at 1,600 Walmart locations, including Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New York, Texas and more. In addition to Walmart and beyond, the retail department of Golden Krust delivers frozen Jamaican pastettes and baked goods in the island style at more than 22,000 retail locations, including Shoplite, Publix and Target.
