Rescuers Searching for Lost Titanic Submarine Detect Sounds

As rescuers frantically search a stretch of Atlantic Ocean the size of Connecticut for the missing OceanGate submarine, “a Canadian aircraft with sonar capabilities detected underwater noise in the search area,” the US Coast Guard announced via Twitter.

Canadian P-3 aircraft detected underwater noise in the search area. As a result, ROV missions were shifted to investigate the origin of the noise. These ROV searches have yielded negative results but will continue. 1/2

The Coast Guard did not provide any further details on the sounds detected and how they were recorded.

Richard Garriott de Cayeux, President of the Explorers Club, tweeted today: “We understand that signs of life have likely been detected at the site. We are waiting for hopefully good news.”

Planes from the US and Canada have been scanning the surface for the sub, while sonar buoys are scanning the seabed.

The Titan submersible carrying five high-profile tourists began its journey to the Titanic wreck on Sunday morning. But about an hour and 45 minutes into the dive, it lost contact with a chartered Canadian research vessel. International rescue teams are trying to locate the ship before the air goes out.
