The New York Islanders announced Thursday their intention to relocate their affiliate, the Bridgeport Islanders, from Connecticut to Hamilton, Ontario, to begin the 2026-2027 season. The move requires approval from the American Hockey League Board of Governors. Subject to approval, the team name, official team logo and ticket information for the Hamilton team will be announced at a later date. “On behalf of the entire New York Islanders organization, I would like to express our deepest gratitude to the city of Bridgeport and the incredibly loyal fans who have supported this team over the last 25 years. From the beginning of the Sound Tigers to our time as the Bridgeport Islanders, this community has been the heart of our AHL operations. We are grateful for the memories, partnerships and passion that Connecticut fans have shown our players and staff,” said Kelly Cheeseman, president of operations for the Islanders and UBS Arena. The Islanders say they are committed to working with Bridgeport on a successful transition for Total Mortgage Arena.
Bridgeport officials also confirmed the move Thursday, agreeing they want to ensure the arena remains open. In a statement, Mayor Joe Gamin thanked the Islanders and the Oak View Group for bringing sports fans and concerts to the city. “Bridgeport has earned a reputation as the ‘Arts and Entertainment Capital of Connecticut,’ and the arena has been an important part of that history. I am committed to working with our state partners on a public process that reimagines what this facility can be and how we can continue to promote Bridgeport’s arts and entertainment identity.”
