Canada Post home delivery is ending as losses force a major shift to municipal mailboxes

Canada Post will phase out door-to-door delivery across the country as part of a comprehensive reform plan to restore financial stability.

This move will convert approximately four million addresses into community mailboxes over several years, completing a transition that has been underway for more than a decade.

The decision comes after financial pressure on the Crown corporation increased.

Canada Post has reported more than $5 billion in losses since 2018 and recorded a $541 million shortfall in the third quarter of 2025 alone.

In its most recent update, the company said the government was removing “long-standing barriers to reform” and directed it to “implement transformative changes to ensure we can meet the changing needs of Canadians without becoming a recurring burden on taxpayers.”

The plan also calls for changes to postal operations after lifting a decades-long restriction on closing or converting rural areas.

“These proposed changes include converting the remaining addresses still receiving doorstep delivery into community mailboxes and modernizing our retail network,” Canada Post said.

Other measures include updating delivery standards for non-urgent mail and reducing reliance on air transportation, which could save more than $20 million annually.

As it restructures its operations by 2035, the company also expects staff reductions through fluctuation and voluntary departures.
