Carmen Corbasson Community Centre in Mississauga, Ontario is scheduled to officially reopen soon, after a three year renovation and expansion.
The popular recreation facility has been closed since September, 2022, and had a soft unofficial opening in March of this year.
Work on the community centre, located on Cawthra Road just south of the QEW, was first scheduled to be finished by late 2024, but the project was delayed until spring 2025
The gymnasium, walking track, fitness studio and multi-purpose rooms have now reopened for public use.
Reduced amenities and programs are being offered at this time while the final touches are made to the renovated facility.
The biggest change affecting the community centre is a new state-of-the-art aquatics centre that will feature a 25-metre, six-lane pool plus a warm water therapy pool.
A new weight room has also opened in the expanded fitness centre.
With the facility now open again, residents and other visitors are now able to access the facility on both a membershp and a drop-in basis.
“The redevelopment at Carmen Corbasson Community Centre will see enhanced recreational services for the community and bring greater accessibility and green building standards,” city officials said in an earlier project update.
The ice hockey arena also received significant upgrades in addition to other areas of the community centre as part of the major facelift.
The Cawthra Road Community Centre, which was built in 1972, was renamed to commemorate the service of former Mississauga city councillor Carmen Corbasson, who died in 2012.
The community centre is one of several across the city undergoing major renovations to combat shortcomings brought about by age.
The city says the $40-million Carmen Corbasson Community Centre redevelopment project includes the renovation of existing infrastructure to address population growth and changing demographics in the area. The biggest addition is the aquatics centre, which is located at the eastern end of the facility. The two swimming pools feature panoramic views of the Cawthra Park forest next door.
City officials expect that this highly anticipated project will enhance the quality of life for local residents by allowing the opportunity for more programming and improved access and safety, while raising the bar on sustainability and green building standards.
Once fully completed, the renovated facility will include:
- a fitness centre with cardio machines, weights and fitness studio with wood sprung floor
- a new aquatics centre with a 25-metre, six-lane pool and a warm water therapy pool
- a new multi-purpose space
- enhancements to existing multi-purpose spaces
- renovations to the indoor arena
- improved connections to the Mississauga Seniors’ Centre
- improved sustainable and accessible design standards
- improvements to the hockey arena
The official grand re-opening is scheduled for June 15, 2025.
