Construction continues to progress on the Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital at the southwest corner of Hurontario Street and Queensway West, where a massive, two-story excavation now extends across much of the site as initial foundation work gets underway. Designed by a multi-company team at Stantec, Adamson Associates Architects, Parkin Architects LimitedAnd Jodoin Lamarre Pratte Architects Inc. for Trillium Health PartnersThe project will construct a 22-story acute care facility adjacent to an 8-story above-ground parking garage. As Ontario’s largest hospital built to date, the project will span approximately 2.8 million square feet.
UrbanToronto’s last update was in January 2026 and covered the earlier phases of the excavation.
This month, activity in the southwest corner of the site has shifted to initial foundation work, with a concrete boom pump extending into the excavation pit to distribute concrete into formwork panels along the perimeter. In the foreground a section of the cast-in-place foundation wall can be seen supported by struts, while in adjacent work areas several reinforced concrete columns can be seen rising from the partially formed slab, each topped with protruding rebar. On the right edge of the picture you can see the base of the first crane, which was installed in February 2026.

Excavation work in the wide pit has now progressed, with the existing hospital buildings on the western edge still in use. A newly installed Metrolinx substation is located next to the construction pit at the northwest corner, while the second crane is being erected at the northern end. A coordinated line of green and yellow crawler excavators can be seen within the pit, with a dirt access ramp descending from the northeast corner to facilitate the circulation of equipment. Along the northern and eastern boundaries, the shoring system is lined with orange safety tarpaulins and tie straps, and temporary stair access is installed for workers working between the grade and the excavation base on the right.

On the slope in the southeast corner there is a clearly organized staging area for construction trailers, containers and material supplies. A compacted earth ramp provides access for trucks and equipment moving between grade and excavated soil.

When completed, the new hospital will have more than 950 beds.
