Exxon Mobil is in advanced discussions with utilities and technology companies to reduce emissions from AI data centers that rely on natural gas by using carbon capture technology, CEO Darren Woods said Friday.

“I hope that many of these hyperscalers are serious when they talk about the desire for low-carbon assets, because in the short to medium term we are certainly the only realistic player that can achieve that,” Woods said on Exxon's earnings call.

Hyperscalers are companies like alphabet, Amazon, Meta And Microsoft that build large data centers to train and run artificial intelligence applications.

Exxon aims to capture 90% of the carbon dioxide emissions emitted by natural gas facilities that operate data centers, Woods said. The oil giant is negotiating with energy companies to decarbonize their facilities, he said.

“We are quite advanced in the discussions,” said the CEO.

The tech sector has largely secured renewable energy to offset emissions from its data centers, although it is now also making large investments in nuclear power.

Some companies rely on natural gas and are looking for reliable energy. For example, Meta signed a contract with the energy supplier Energy in Louisiana to supply natural gas to a data center campus.

“We have secured locations. We have the existing infrastructure, and definitely the know-how regarding the technology of recording, transport and storage.” [carbon dioxide]said Woods.
