Ryan spoke out about how much she despises the Black Lives Matter movement and called black people “lazy.”
Judge Kathleen Ryan, who described herself as a “new racist,” has officially resigned from her job as a judge in Oakland County, Michigan, after an investigation revealed troubling records about her feelings toward Black people and members of the LGBTQ+ community, WXYZ Detroit reports.
Ryan can be heard on recordings from September 2024 expressing offensive views on both demographics and arguing that she is not “systematically racist” but rather “a new racist.” She has been on paid administrative leave for months but has now voluntarily resigned.
The recordings are the result of the brave Oakland County Probate Court Administrator Edward Hutton, who is also an attorney. Hutton said Ryan had harassed him for years and he finally decided to speak out because he felt someone with such views would be incapable of making fair decisions. “Anyone who has so much hatred in their hearts for certain people — not just individuals, but groups of people — I don’t think they could even make fair, unbiased decisions about them,” he said.
Ryan spoke out about how much she despises the Black Lives Matter movement and called Black people “lazy.” “I’m so mad about this Black Lives Matter, #MeToo,” she was heard saying.
“If you’re from England, a black man from another country, you’re doing much better. If you’re an American black man, then you’re a fucking lazy piece of shit.”
Colleagues like Judge Daniel A. O’Brien were disappointed with the handling of the investigation and called her removal “a sad day for the court.” “She was a great judge and was respected for her work on the jury,” he said. But others, like Dave Woodward, chairman of the Oakland County Board of Commissioners, who was the first to receive copies of the recordings, said he was “disgusted” by what he heard. “It disgusted me. There’s just no excuse,” Woodward said, according to the Detroit Free Press.
“Such language demeans the robe, corrupts the judiciary and destroys trust in our legal system.”
Upon learning that her racist hot takes were being recorded, Hutton said she once bragged about being “untouchable” because of her legal status. Ryan’s thoughts were reinforced by the fact that he was once accused of domestic violence. The charges were later dropped after she told police she was a judge. “I’m pretty untouchable. So you guys really want to be shitty…You’ve got 22 judges that are shitty,” Ryan was once heard saying.
“You know what – they’ll still support me.”
I guess she was wrong.
