Second Phase of Edge Towers Nears Topping Off

In the Downtown Hurontario Street corridor in Mississauga, Solmar Development Corporation’s second phase of Edge Towers is scheduled for completion in September. Designed by Roy Varacalli, the ambitious three-phase project has made significant progress since breaking ground over three years ago. Along with the tiered Edge 1 in the illustration below, Edge 2 displays rectilinear geometries through the tightly defined grid pattern framing its stamped windows and inset balconies. The functional design conceals the mechanical penthouse and gives the tower an uninterrupted, elegant silhouette against the backdrop of the horizon.

When UrbanToronto last took an interest in the project two years ago, the 35-story Edge 1 had begun to make a name for itself. Today, Edge 1 is complete and welcoming residents, while Edge 2 is fast approaching completion at 40 floors. A northwest view of the site along Hurontario Street in July shows portions of Edge 1 and Edge 2 visible between adjacent buildings. Edge 2 is now roughly on par with its neighbors and work on the 35th floor is nearing completion.

Looking east from afar, the architectural narrative of the Edge Towers becomes even more intriguing. The image shows the series of recesses on Edge 1’s southwest facade leading to its mechanical penthouse. An operational tower crane stretches across Edge 2, a reminder of the work in progress and the tower’s impending ascent to its full height.

In late August, we look southeast across Square One Shopping Center to confirm the towers’ newfound presence over the Mississauga skyline. The uncompleted Edge 2 (second crane from left) stands alongside other evolving skyline landmarks such as the 35-story 185 Enfield Place (left) to the north and the Exchange District Condos (two towers down). right), the tallest building is expected to reach 72 floors. With several floors yet to be completed, Edge 2 is already making a name for itself and joins an impressive list of high-rise buildings that dot Mississauga’s ever-changing skyline.

Finally we look north where the two Edge Towers stand close together against a dawning sky tempered by the faint light. Edge 2 is captured against the stunning sky, with about seven stories left to climb. The strictly geometric exterior of both towers provides a contrast to the older buildings in the area and highlights Edge’s architectural contribution to the city.

With the presence of Edge 1 and 2, anticipation grows for the third, final and tallest phase, Oro at Edge Towers, which is set to span 50 floors. With a key location near the future Hurontario LRT, this community is part of the vertical growth that is shaping Mississauga.
