The transition to renewable energy sources has helped drive growth in the utilities sector over the past decade, but investors need to keep a keen eye to spot the best opportunities in this space.

TipRanks recognized the top 10 analysts in the utilities sector who achieved significant returns and differentiated themselves from their peers with their recommendations.

TipRanks used its Experts Center tool to identify the analysts with high success rates. It then analyzed every recommendation from analysts in the utilities sector over the past 10 years. TipRanks’ algorithms calculated the statistical significance of each rating, the average return, and the overall analyst success rate.

1. Shelby Tucker – RBC Capital

Shelby Tucker tops the list. Tucker has an overall success rate of 67%. His best rating was on fluence energy (NASDAQ:FLNC), a provider of energy storage products and services. His call to buy FLNC stock from May 18, 2022 to May 18, 2023 returned an impressive 177.1%.

2. Frederic Bastien—Raymond James

Frederic Bastien is second on the list with a 62% success rate. Bastien’s top recommendation is Black Diamond (TSE: BDI), a Canadian company that operates a portfolio of companies focused on modular buildings and temporary housing solutions for workers. The analyst generated a profit of 179.5% from May 7, 2020 to May 7, 2021 with his buy recommendation for the BDI share.

3.Benjamin Pham—BMO Capital

Benjamin Pham, an analyst at BMO Capital, is #3 on the list. Pham has a 68% success rate. His best recommendation was AltaGas (TSE:ALA), a Canadian energy infrastructure company. The analyst returned 113% by rating the stock as Buy from March 16, 2020 to March 16, 2021.

4. Mark Jarvi-CIBC

Mark Jarvi ranks fourth on the list. The analyst has an overall success rate of 70%. Jarvi’s top recommendation was Pinnacle Renewable (TSE: PL), a Canadian manufacturer of industrial wood pellets. Based on his buy rating, the analyst returned 161.7% from July 21, 2020 to July 21, 2021. Pinnacle was acquired by the Drax Group in 2021.

5. Robert Catellier—CIBC

Fifth-ranked analyst Robert Catellier has a 66% success rate. His best recommendation is Keyera (TSE: KEY), a Canada-based integrated energy infrastructure company. Based on this selection, the analyst returned 179.1% from March 18, 2020 to March 18, 2021.

6. Alberto Gandolfi—Goldman Sachs

Alberto Gandolfi took sixth place. The analyst boasts a 64% success rate. Gandolfi’s top recommendation was for Orsted (OTCMKTS:DNNGY), a Danish company that develops and operates offshore and onshore wind and solar farms, energy storage facilities, and renewable hydrogen and green fuel facilities. From March 23, 2020 to March 23, 2021, the analyst’s call to buy Orsted stock returned 88.1%.

7. Nelson Ng – RBC Capital

Nelson Ng, an analyst at RBC Capital, ranks seventh on this list with a 60% success rate. The analyst’s best decision was to buy shares of methanex (TSE:MX), a Canadian manufacturer and supplier of methanol. The recommendation generated a return of 194.6% from May 7, 2020 to January 4, 2021.

8. Patrick Kenny – National Bank

In eighth place is Patrick Kenny of the National Bank. Kenny has an overall success rate of 67%. The analyst’s top pick was Secure Energy Services (TSE:SES), a Canadian environmental and energy infrastructure company. This buy call saw the analyst post a solid return of 323.5% from October 26, 2020 to October 26, 2021.

9. Neil Kalton—Wells Fargo

Neil Kalton is ninth on the list. The analyst boasts a 63% success rate. His top call went to Orsted. The buy recommendation generated a return of 81.8% from 10/14/2019 to 10/14/2020.

10. Julien Dumoulin-Smith – Bank of America Securities

Julien Dumoulin-Smith is 10th on the list with a 57% success rate. The analyst’s best decision was to buy shares in Vivint Solar, which was later acquired by sun run (NASDAQ:RUN), a provider of solar, battery storage and residential energy services. The recommendation generated a return of 547.5% from 9/30/2019 to 9/30/2020.
