FHFA preparations to consider cryptocurrencies as asset for mortgages

In a pioneering layer for the US housing financing system, the Federal Housing Finance Agency has published a guideline in which Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac officially take into account the cryptocurrency as a wealth for single-family mortgage loan risks.

The move, which was signed by FHFA director William J. Pulte on Wednesday, signals a new era of the crypto integration into the traditional financial infrastructure -this time at the heart of American home loans.

The order indicates both housing financing giants to develop proposals that contain digital assets -without liquidating the borrower in US dollar in US dollar before a loan.

Pult said in a post to X that the move with the vision of President Donald Trump “,” to “make” the United States a crypto capital of the world.

In the past, the cryptocurrency was excluded from underwrameworks due to volatility, regulatory uncertainty and the inability to easily check the reserves. This directive changes this.

The decision comes at a time of increasing the institutional hug of crypto in relation to banking transactions, payments and federal politics.

“Cryptocurrency is an emerging wealth class that may offer the opportunity to build up prosperity outside of the stock and bond markets,” says the Order, which recognizes the growing role of crypto in household financial portfolios.

The guideline limits the examination to digital assets that are stored on US regulated, centralized stock exchanges and can be clearly demonstrated. In addition, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have to develop internal adjustments to take into account the market volatility of crypto and ensure that all risk -weight reserves that exist do not endanger.

As part of the guideline, both companies must submit their evaluation proposals to the administrative councils for approval and then the FHFA for the final review.

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were under government control in September 2008 as companies that are known as state -funded companies or GSES.
