Environmental performance is now embedded in nearly every aspect of urban design, from the planning of neighborhoods to the materials and systems used in construction. As the Greater Golden Horseshoe continues to grow, questions about energy use, emissions, water management and resiliency, in addition to cost, design and delivery times, are increasingly influencing development decisions. In April, UrbanToronto is focusing on the state of the environment. A special editorial examines how sustainability is integrated across projects and at the city level, from mass transit expansion and watershed planning to evolving building standards and practices.
State of Environment articles examine how approaches are changing based on a mix of industry characteristics and explanations. Topics range from green building materials, mass timber and low-carbon concrete to energy-efficient design, electrification and net-zero strategies, and take a look at certifications such as LEED and the Toronto Green Standard. The focus will be on transport-oriented development, soft densification and the role of infrastructure in reducing emissions.
