“…I don’t think this government has really given us anything that has boosted my confidence.”
Maryland Gov. Wes Moore criticized President Donald Trump’s decision to launch military strikes against Iran, saying his own war experience made him worried about the potential consequences.
Moore, a veteran, spoke about what it’s like to experience war firsthand and said the government is showing signs of being overwhelmed.
“As someone who has fought in one of these regime change wars and who knows how difficult these wars are — I have lost friends to wars like this — I am skeptical and I don’t think this administration has really given us anything that would have made me more confident,” the Democratic leader told TheGrio.
“I just see a whole bunch of contradictions when we were told months ago that the nuclear program was wiped out, but now we had to act immediately … because we are now supposed to believe that an attack is imminent,” he added. “A coalition of either international partners or even the involvement of the American people [buy in] on, or Congress, was not there.”
Last year, Moore accused Trump of not taking the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran seriously. According to Politico, his comments came shortly after Trump said he had given leaders in Tehran an “ultimate ultimatum” about disarming their nuclear program. He told reporters: “I can do it, I can not do it,” in reference to U.S. attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
“As someone who has worn this uniform and, as you know, risked my life alongside my comrades in defense of this country, it is disappointing to see such casual conversation about matters of life and death,” Moore said.
Some of his constituents share similar thoughts. Demonstrations condemning the military strike against Iran took place in Baltimore.
“The U.S. shouldn’t be anywhere over there,” said Carrington Scott of the Baltimore People’s Power Assembly Organizer. “The US is completely over there to deprive the region of resources to bring about the change of government because the Iranian revolution is not cooperating.”
Other protesters believe Trump and his team should focus on the needs of the people who voted him into office in the first place. “We do not support our tax dollars going to this war,” said a protester named Fathima, who belongs to the Party for Socialism and Liberation.
Scott added: “Our own people here are being left behind in food deserts… where education and literacy are lacking.”
While Moore said his “heart still breaks for those soldiers we lost,” he warned that chaos could continue under Trump’s leadership.
“We continue to see completely uncontrolled leadership,” he continued. “I’m not sure anyone, even in the administration, could explain its foreign policy or the legality of it.”
