China’s ambassador to Canada is warning Ottawa that if the Liberal government wants to strengthen and build a “strategic partnership” with China, it must ban MPs from visiting the self-governing island of Taiwan and stop sending Canadian naval vessels through the Taiwan Strait.

In an interview with the publicly funded Canadian Press, Chinese Ambassador to Canada Wang Di reportedly called on Canada to sever all relations with Taiwan and refrain from participating in U.S.-led exercises in the Taiwan Strait, claiming that Taiwan belongs to China.

Canada ended formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 1970 under former Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau and has since pursued a “One China Policy,” recognizing the communist government in Beijing as the sole legitimate government of “Chinese territory,” including Taiwan and Tibet.
