Canada vs. Germany live score, updates, highlights from 2023 World Juniors

The second game for Canada at World Juniors 2023 takes place today as the host country meets Germany in Group A.

Canada did not start as expected and suffered a surprise defeat against the Czech Republic on Monday. The reigning gold medalists received poor goalkeeping performance and had several mishaps in their own zone, resulting in defeat.

“They surpassed us,” said striker Brennan Othmann. “You can’t take any team lightly. They made a good game, so credit goes to them. It’s a learning curve. They say you win or you learn and tonight it was learning.”

The loss adds a bump to Canada’s road to No. 1 in the group. However, the next step in getting there is to shift the focus forward.

“It’s only the first day, it’s not the gold medal game,” said Othmann. “Of course there is a lot of hype about our team, but at the same time you want to win, especially with this great crowd. Now we have to recover in two days. It doesn’t hurt to get through a game like this. Every team does. It’s good for us and a bit humiliating.”

The Germans are also aiming for their first tournament victory. In their game on Tuesday, Germany came up short in the goalkeeper duel, losing 1-0 to Sweden.

Nikita Quapp was sensational in the German net and parried 43 of his 44 shots. But on the other side was Sweden’s Carl Lindbom, who proved unbeatable for the second straight game at World Juniors.

second period

20:04 — The call is confirmed, there is a match penalty for Bettahar. Canada gets a five-minute power play, as Gaucher and Bettahar also each get random minors to rough out.

So far in this event, Adam Fantilli has eaten a hip and a helmet. And no points.

8 p.m. — Bettahar high hits Fantilli right in the head. Nathan Gaucher takes offense and goes after Bettahar. Officials are calling it a match penalty for a headshot, but will review it as expected. I’m not sure if Bettahar intended to hit the head, but it definitely hit Fantilli’s helmet.

7:54 p.m. – GOAL! Bedard completes the hat trick with a snipe off the post and in. He has such a quick release and it beats Wolf on the glove side. This kid is special. 5-1 Canada with 6:03 left in center picture.

19:53 — Really good move from Canada’s fourth row followed by a few dominant seconds down the top row before play is halted for a German penalty for too many men. Germany had six players on the ice, easy task for the officials. Canada is 2 for 3 on the PP so far.

19:48 — Respect to the Germans, they don’t give in. A much more even playing field here in the second period than in the first.

19:46 — Back to 5v5 as Canada successfully repels the Zellweger penalty.

19:44 — Ryan Del Monte goes straight to the dressing room after rolling his right ankle behind him. The replay didn’t look good for the German striker and he had to be helped off the ice.

19:43 — Germany is heading for its first power play when Zellweger is called upon to interfere. Canada battled Czech power play in their first game.

19:36 — Othmann wants to meet everything and everyone. He just placed Bettahar neatly on the forecheck. It was an integral part of his game as his physical play was very effective for Canada over the summer.

7:32 p.m. – GOAL! A miscommunication between Wolf and Bettahr results in the puck going straight for Bedard up front, who puts it into the empty goal. Wolf went to cover the puck that came off the end ties, but his defenseman batted it away to Bedard. Less than a minute and a half into the second, and it’s a 4-1 lead for Canada.

19:31 — Second period is a go.

End of first period: Canada 3, Germany 1

19:13 — It’s more like that as Canada leads 3-1 over Germany after 20 minutes. Canada controlled most of the game and scored two power play goals. Germany’s only record came on what felt like one of maybe two times when they got sustained pressure in the attacking zone.

19:12 — The Joshua Roy-Logan Stankoven-Bedard line works really well. Dennis Williams found something with these three. They create random after random.

7:08 p.m. – GOAL! Connor Bedard via the breakaway makes it 3-1. Germany’s turnover in the offensive zone allows Canada to break out quickly and Bedard beats Wolf on the glove side. It is now 3:1 with less than three minutes in the first round.

7:01 p.m. – GOAL! Canada comes back to the power play, this time it’s Shane Wright. He slams a loose puck forward to regain the lead for Canada. It looks like Leon van der Linde hit it in his own net. 2-1 Canada with six and a half to go in the first.

18:59 — Lutz gets his second penalty of the half when he is called to boarding. He put a big throw right into Zellweger’s numbers.

6:57 p.m. – GOAL! After the unrecognized goal for Canada, Germany comes down and takes one. Roman Kechter beats Thomas Milic on a shot that the Canada keeper wants back as it squeaked through his midsection. Tie game nine minutes before the end.

18:55 — It’s confirmed, no goal.

18:53 — Canada think they have another goal but it sounded like the whistle blew before the puck went in. It looked like Wolf had it covered, but Canada kept hacking at the puck and it eventually got to the crease to Fantilli, who netted it. officials discuss.

6:48 p.m. – GOAL! Dylan Guenther completes a nice passing game to give the Canadians a 1-0 lead. Olen Zellweger hits Bedard in the net and Bedard shoves it for Guenther to catch and shoot goal. The power play comes through for Canada.

18:46 — Connor Bedard uses his speed and skill to score a penalty. Julian Lutz makes his way to the slashing and the Canadian powerplay gets right back to work.

18:43 — Brennan Othmann with a huge shot on the power play, but he puts it right in the stomach by Simon Wolf.

18:40 — Early power play for Canada as Ryan Bettahar is called out for delaying the game.

18:38 — Puck is down and play is underway.

foreplay

17:32 — Here are the lines for Canada and Germany. The Canadians may get a break by dodging Nikita Quapp, who gets a day off after his performance of 43 saves against the Swedes yesterday.

Here are the lines for Canada and Germany. The Othmann-Wright-Guenther line of U18 worlds is reunited. Bedard and Roy join Stankoven in the second row. Fantilli fell into the third row with Gaucher and Dean. pic.twitter.com/9kWy35geGx

17:15 — Williams promised changes to the attacking ranks and we have a new look for the top three ranks in Canada. Most notably, Connor Bedard and Shane Wright are separated and Adam Fantilli falls to the third row.

New Top 9 for Canada.

Dean Gaucher Fantilli

4 p.m. — After Benjamin Gaudreau’s poor performance against the Czech Republic, Dennis Williams and Thomas Milic take on Germany. That might have been the plan, but after Gaudreau was pulled in the first set, it was an easy call for Williams. Lineup changes are also coming for Canada.

Thomas Milic starts tomorrow for 🇨🇦, says Dennis Williams

No practice today but the coach says there will be lineup changes against 🇩🇪 @TSN_Edge
